New Smoke Alarm Laws – Deadline 1 January 2027
From 1 January 2027, every home in Queensland must comply with the state's smoke alarm legislation. This includes owner-occupied homes, with the final stage of the legislation bringing all existing private homes, townhouses and units under the same requirements that already apply to rental properties and homes being sold.
To comply, your home must have:
✅ Photoelectric smoke alarms that comply with AS 3786:2014
✅ Interconnected alarms so that when one alarm activates, they all sound
✅ Smoke alarms installed in every bedroom
✅ Smoke alarms installed in hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the home
✅ At least one smoke alarm on every level of the home
✅ Alarms that are correctly installed, maintained and in working order
